Cyclone ‘AMPHAN’ getting stronger; to bring heavy rains, high wind speed in W Bengal, Odisha
New Delhi With ‘AMPHAN’ getting stronger and intensifying into a Super Cyclonic Storm, the
the India Meteorological Department on Monday warned of heavy rainfall and high wind speed in West Bengal and Odisha.
The super cyclonic storm is likely to make a landfall on May 20.
According to the latest release at 1500 hrs by the Cyclone Warning Division of the IMD, the storm is very likely to move nearly northwards for some more time and then north-northeast wards across northwest Bay of Bengal and cross West Bengal – Bangladesh coasts between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) close to Sundarbans during the afternoon or evening of May 20.
IMD has predicted that coastal Odisha is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall at many places from Monday evening with heavy falls at isolated places over coastal Odisha sucha as Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara Districts on May 18.

“Rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Balasore, Bhadrak and Mayurbhanj districts and isolated heavy falls over Khordha and Puri districts on 19th May19 and isolated heavy rainfall over Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Kendrapara and Keonjhar districts on May 20”, the IMD said.
Similarly in West Bengal, the districts of East Medinipur, South and North 24 Parganas are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy falls at isolated places on May 19.
Rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and extremely heavy falls at isolated places East and West Medinipur, South and North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hoogli, Kolkata and adjoining districts on May 20 and isolated heavy rain over interior districts on May 21.
Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places over Malda and Dinajpur districts on May 20 and over most of the districts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on May 21.
