Nearing 400 nurses resign from Bengal

New Delhi/Kolkata  India’s Covid fight is facing a major challenge with nearing 400 nurses resigning from Bengal hospitals and returning to their home states.

According to reports reaching the National Capital on Sunday, while 185 nurses went back to Manipur on Saturday, another 186 is embarking on towards Odisha, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh and other states.

All of these nurses were serving different private hospitals spread across the state, including Kolkata.

The reason behind the mass resignations of nurses from state hospitals is yet to be ascertained.

Demands are pouring in from various quarters for interventions in this regard by the State Government as well as the Centre to find the exact cause as the statewide Corona death toll heightened to 232.

Informatively, in the wake of the controversy that had erupted over “discrepancies” in Bengal’s covid death figures, the state government on May 12 affected a major bureaucratic reshuffle by moving state Health Secretary Vivek Kumar out of his department.

While the state government called Kumar’s shifting a “routine transfer”, the move was seen in political circles as the result of the mismatch between covid death figures provided by the state and those calculated by the centre.

The state classified the deaths as “deaths due to Covid” and “deaths with Covid but due to co-morbidities”. The centre had no such classification and reported all deaths of covid positive patients as covid deaths. Meanwhile, experts are of the view that the mass resignations of nurses from Bengal will further ‘complicate’ the situation in the State.
