1533 – Religious preacher Chaitanya Dev passed away at the age of 47 in Jagannath Puri.
1816- South American country Argentina gained independence from Spain.
1852 – 1100 under-construction buildings in Montreal city of Canada were gutted by a terrible fire.
1875 – Bombay Stock Exchange, the country’s first stock exchange, is established.
1877- Wimbledon tennis competition held for the first time.
1925 – Gurudutt, the noted actor, producer and director of Hindi films, was born.
1944- Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose accepted the leadership of Azad Hind Fauj for India’s independence.
1951- First Five Year Plan (1951-56) started in India.
1969 – The Wildlife Board selected the lion as the national animal of the country.
1972 – Soviet Union conducts underground nuclear test.
1991 – South Africa gets permission to participate in the Olympic Games again.
2002 – The African Union is established in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, and South African President Thabo Mbeki becomes its first president.
2006 – At least 122 people die when a plane crashes on the runway of Siberia’s Irkutsk Airport.
2011 – Partition of African country Sudan. The southern part separated from Sudan became Southern Sudan.
